Beer & Madler Rilles
The 19th century magazine The Astronomical Register published many articles about the Moon, including translations of material from German. One interesting series of five articles from 1881 was a translation of a catalog of 92 rilles from the lunar authors Beer and Mädler. According to the first paragraph of the article this list came from a publication I have never heard of: Beitrage zur physischen Kenntniss der himmlischen Körper in Sonnensysteme (Contributions to the Physical Knowledge of the Bodies of the Solar System). I wonder if this was part of their classic 1837 book Der Mond? According to Sheehan and Dobbins’ Epic Moon, Der Mond included 90 rilles, and later after Mädler started using a 9.5″ refractor he found 60 more. This is the list of 92 as a series of pdf files from the NASA Astrophysical Data System. Enjoy!
