Alika Herring Moon Articles in Sky & Telescope

Alika Herring was an extraordinary observer, artist, mirror maker and musician. From the beginning of the space age (1958) through the 1960s he contributed quarterly articles and drawings of features in the Moon. These classic articles ideally should be online but in the meantime here is an index, listed by crater name, so you can find them in a library with a long run of S&T back issues. As a student, I worked at the Lunar & Planetary Lab in Tucson at the same time as Alika and was privileged to talk with him. We observed together with the Kitt Peak 84" telescope when Ranger 9 impacted the Moon. Our goal was to look for dust thrown up by the impact, but we saw none. But we did have a memorable view of the Moon with a huge telescope! Near the end of his life Alika was profiled in S&T: Master Optician, Master Observer, by Richard Norton, May 1995, p. 81-86.
