Using a 3.5" telescope Madler, who was hired by the banker Beer, constructed the most important lunar chart and accompanying text of the 19th century. Afterwards Madler became the Director of the Dorpat Observatory in Estonian, where he passed into obscurity - at least as far as the Moon is concerned.
