Spurr's charts were crude but often expressed important observations. This map shows two different ages for mare material in Serenitatis and Tranquillitatis, with older material being dotted and the younger marked by vertical lines. This relation was only rediscovered during the Apollo period. Spurr consciously realized the limitations of doing geology at a distance - he called himself "an earthbound geologist."
