1958: Hastings, Nebraska Moon Globe

The entrance to the J.M. McDonald Planetarium was build in 1958 by then museum director W. E. Eigsti (back row, second from right) and co-workers. The entrance door was originally intended to slide up and down, but mechanical difficulties and fire codes prompted its removal by the mid-1960's, and the door was discarded around 1976.

The model is based on actual lunar topography (unbeknownst to me before now!); maria, mountain ranges, and large craters are recognizable even on the photo. The diameter of the model is approximately ten feet.
